How to Restore a Crypto Wallet from a Seed Phrase
If you lose your wallet or get a new device, you can restore it using your seed phrase. This post explains the process for software and hardware wallets, including common issues and troubleshooting.
One of the most important skills in crypto is knowing how to restore a wallet from a seed phrase. Whether you buy a new phone, your wallet app crashes, or you upgrade to a hardware wallet, the seed phrase is your lifeline. This guide walks you through the process.
What You Need
You need your seed phrase (the list of 12, 18, or 24 words in the exact order) and a compatible wallet. The wallet must support the same cryptocurrency and the same seed phrase standard (usually BIP39). Most wallets do.
Step 1: Get a Wallet App
If you are restoring on a new device, download the same wallet app you used before. For example, if you used Trust Wallet, download Trust Wallet again. Alternatively, you can use a different wallet that supports the same seed standard. For instance, you can restore a MetaMask seed into another BIP39 wallet.
Step 2: Choose Restore or Import
Open the wallet app. On the welcome screen, look for an option like 'Restore wallet' or 'Import wallet'. Do not create a new wallet. Tap on restore.
Step 3: Enter Your Seed Phrase
The app will ask you to enter your seed phrase. Type each word in the correct order. Most apps auto-suggest words, which helps prevent typos. Use the exact spelling and order. If you have 24 words, all 24 must be entered.
Step 4: Set a New Password
After entering the seed phrase, the app will ask you to create a new password. This password protects the wallet on this device. It is not the same as your seed phrase. Choose a strong password and remember it.
Step 5: Wait for Sync
The wallet will scan the blockchain to find your transactions and balances. This may take a few minutes. Once done, your funds will appear. If nothing shows, double-check that you selected the correct blockchain network (e.g., Ethereum mainnet).
Restoring on a Hardware Wallet
For hardware wallets like Ledger or Trezor, the process is similar. Connect the device, select 'Restore from seed', and enter the words using the device buttons. The device will then generate your keys.
Troubleshooting
If the wallet says 'invalid seed', you may have a typo or wrong word order. Some wallets use a specific word list; make sure each word is from that list. Also check if you have the correct number of words. If you have a passphrase (extra word), you need that too.
Security Reminder
Never enter your seed phrase into a website or app you don't trust. Only use official wallet apps. After restoring, consider moving your funds to a new wallet if you suspect your seed phrase was compromised.
Restoring a wallet is straightforward once you know the steps. Practice with a small amount to ensure your seed phrase works before relying on it.
